Payload capacity and towing capability are two separate concepts
Payload is the weight you put on a truck including passengers and cargo. Depending on the configuration trucks can carry anywhere from 1200 lbs  for 1/2 ton trucks  to 4000 lbs for a heavy duty trucks.

Towing capacity is the maximum trailer weight a truck  can pull. This can range from 8000 lbs for a 1/2 ton truck to over 35000 lbs for a heavy duty truck like a properly equipped Ram 3500 DRW.
